This elegant, rounded urn is created using an age old pottery technique called Raku. The pet urns shown to the left are examples. The urn you receive will be 100% unique. Choose from the two finishes pictured - Dolphin Blue (main) or Aqua Crackle (small photo, click to enlarge).
This Raku style pet urn pottery is a Japanese art form and, interestingly, pioneered a close working relationship between the potter and his patron. In keeping with this principle, our Raku pet urns have been designed with loving care knowing the special role they will play in holding your loved one's cremains.
The finish is created by an oxygen and carbon exchange to create the unique look. It is achieved through a multi-step firing process wherein the urn is removed from the kiln while very, very hot and placed in a special container. The container holds combustibles such as straw which ignite when the super-hot urn is placed nearby. Then the container is closed and the environment is regulated to create oxygen depletion that causes the unique cracks and color variations shown in the clay and glaze.

This urn is completely ceramic, including the lid. If you wish to permanently seal your urn, we recommed using a high quality silicon sealant which you can purchase at any hardware store. Place a bead of glue around the lip of the urn and then put the lid on. For tips on using pet urns and storing ashes, please see our Urns FAQs.
Pam Sinclair-Nixon is the talented artist of this pet urn. She has been working with clay for over 30 years and brings much experience and care to each piece she crafts. A lifetime student of ceramics, she finds inspiration in the oldest ceramics in existence, which are often funerary pieces. These ancient urns lead her to explore myths and rituals that transcend time and cultures around the world. She also enjoys incorporating nature into her urns.
